About the Act on Protection for Persons Reporting Irregularities

The Whistleblower Act applies to all organisations in the private and public sectors.

The Act on Protection for Persons Reporting Irregularities (SFS 2021:193), also known as the Whistleblower Act, entered into effect on 17 December 2021. It applies to all organisations in the private and public sectors. The Act protects people who report irregularities in a work-related context if they of such a serious nature that disclosing them is in the public interest.

The Whistleblower Act is intended to protect people who report irregularities from, for example, reprisals and obstructive measures. Among other things, the Act requires an operator that had 50 or more employees at the start of the calendar year to have internal reporting channels in place, and competent public authorities to have external reporting channels in place. The Act also contains provisions on the prerequisites for being afforded protection, the processing of personal data och secrecy.
