Degree Application
Once you have completed your compulsory courses, obtained the number of credits required for your doctoral subject, and successfully defended your doctoral thesis, it is time to apply for your degree. This page provides information about all the steps involved.
Degree Titles
Doctoral degrees at KTH are awarded as Degree of Licentiate of Technology or Degree of Doctor of Technology. In individual cases, another degree prefix (for example, Philosophy) may be used following a decision as described below.
Decision on a Degree Prefix Other than Technology
A decision to use a degree prefix other than Technology is made by the responsible for third-cycle education (FA) at an early stage of the doctoral student's studies, and no later than five weeks before the intended date of the licentiate seminar or doctoral thesis defence. When making the decision, consideration must be given to the doctoral student's specialisation in their first- and second-cycle studies, or their academic background in the subject area, as well as the specialisation of the doctoral education at KTH.
Applying for Your Degree
Before applying for your degree, make sure that the following requirements have been met:

You have completed the compulsory courses and obtained the number of credits required for your doctoral subject. If you are unsure, contact the person responsible for your doctoral subject or consult the general syllabus applicable to you.

All courses to be included in your degree have been reported as completed in Ladok.

The spelling of your thesis title in Ladok is correct in both Swedish and English.

Make sure that the courses you want to include in your degree are registered in your Individual Study Plan (ISP).

Your ISP must have been established for your degree to be issued.
Application
You apply for your degree through Ladok. You can use Ladok to apply for all types of degrees at all levels. The processing time for a degree certificate is usually around 8–10 weeks.
Degree Certificate
The first page of the degree certificate states your name, degree title and date of issue. This is followed by a transcript of completed courses, which includes your name, Swedish personal identity number, doctoral subject, degree title and all completed courses included in the degree.
All KTH degree certificates are bilingual, in Swedish and English, and are issued as electronic documents.
KTH degree certificates are electronically sealed. Information on how to verify the electronic seal can be found on the last page of the degree certificate. You will receive an email notification when your degree certificate has been issued. The degree certificate can be downloaded from Ladok for Students or Ladok for Alumni.
Doctoral Conferment Ceremony
Every year, KTH organises a doctoral conferment ceremony followed by a banquet at Stockholm City Hall. Participation is voluntary, but the ceremony offers a formal opportunity to celebrate your academic achievement. Once your degree has been formally awarded, you will, together with other doctoral graduates, receive your diploma during the ceremony in a formal and memorable setting.
Information about the date, venue and registration will be sent to all doctoral graduates concerned.
During the ceremony, participants traditionally wear academic dress and receive their diplomas.
