Group web

With the help of groups, you can collaborate and communicate with others, for example, in projects, networks and departmental groups. You can join groups that you are interested in or create your own. Group websites can be created by both students and employees at KTH. On this page you can read more about how the Group web works.

Communicate and share information with others

The group web offers various features. Here's what you can do in a group:

Good to know about rights in the Group web

Many features require you to be an Administrator in the group. Read more under the heading "Rights levels for open groups". Inside the Group web are also help texts that explain this in more detail.

  • Build up a left menu and create pages.

  • Post pictures and files.

  • Comment and discuss with others.

  • Create Wiki pages that other users with a KTH account can edit.

  • Post events/meetings in the group's calendar. Anyone subscribes to the group automatically gets these events up in their calendars.

Find groups

You can search among groups  to find the one you're interested in (note: closed groups don't appear in search results).

You can see the most recently active groups on the Socials home page

Subscribe to a group you want to follow

You can subscribe to a group you want to follow by pressing the "Subscribe" button in the left menu of the group page. When you subscribe, you will have a direct link to the group in the Personal menu. You will get the group's calendar events entered in your calendar and email notifications for all events in the group. Groups you use more often than others can be marked as "favourites" in the Personal menu by tapping the star in front of the group's name.

Create your group

You can create a new group directly in the Personal menu (under "Groups"). Here is a direct link to "create a new group" .

Give your group a name and description that tells you what the purpose is. The description appears in the search results when someone is looking for a specific group. In the description, you can also upload an image for the group. Choose whether your group should be open or closed.

When you add a person to a group, that person automatically receives a subscription with mailings about what's happening in the group. Only admins can remove members and other admins.

Open or closed group?

There are two types of groups: open (public) and closed (shown only to group members).

  • Open. Everyone (the whole world) gets to read comments, posts and pages. In a group, more people can communicate. You can still make some content (such as posts and pages) visible only to group members and admins. An open group is searchable.

  • Closed. Only members are allowed to read and write in the group. A closed group is not searchable for anyone outside the group. New members must be manually added by someone who has administrator rights.

Rights levels for open groups

In open groups, pages and posts have four levels of visibility. At the bottom of each page and post, you can see its level of visibility. These levels are available:

  • The whole world. The pages come up in external search engines, e.g. Google searches.

  • All logged-in users. People who have a KTH account see.

  • The members and administrators of the group.

  • Just the group's admins. Only admins can see these posts/pages in their activity stream.

Comments automatically get the same visibility as the page or post they belong. When you write a comment, you will see at the bottom of the edge what visibility the post / page has that you are commenting on.

Change the visibility of a group

Tips!

Inside the Group web pages, there are explanatory help texts in connection with most functions and settings. We recommend that you read the instructions carefully.

If you're an admin in a group, you can change the visibility of your group. Go to Overview>Change Description. There is also a link under Administration> group members.

Remember that the only content that automatically becomes open when you go from a closed to an open group is the group's description text. The remaining pages you need to adjust the visibility on yourself.
