Feasibility study - future connectivity, networks and spectrum for industrial radio systems
Objective
To identify and analyze various future challenges and techno-economic-spectrum system
solutions for connectivity of industrial radio systems.
Abstract
The feasibility study aims to create knowledge about opportunities and conditions for being
able to design, deliver, install and use future radio systems for industrial use. The project
includes a supplier (Åkerströms), a user company (Boliden) and the Swedish Telecom
Agency PTS. The project is coordinated by KTH.
Challenges exist in terms of both radio technology and different spectrum bands as well as a
changed business landscape for this type of product. We now go from a situation where
connectivity and radio are included as an integral part of the system solution to scenarios
where both spectrum and networks can be owned and controlled by either the industrial
company or some other actor, e.g. a national or local network operator.
The feasibility study and project will contribute to growth for Swedish industry and to
strengthen the international competitiveness. The project results will enable Swedish industry
to "be out early" in identifying new challenges and developing new solutions. The feasibility
study will map and overall analyze technical, spectrum and market conditions, all as a basis
for a future project and to add the following values to project partners:
- For end users (industry): Opportunity to improve system performance in terms of capacity and technical reliability. Business reliability can also be improved through increased own control and reduced risk of lock-in.
- For suppliers: Opportunity to offer improved system performance, both capacity and technical reliability, as well as to get an overview of diversity of spectrum and market configurations that must be supported on different markets
- For the telecom authority PTS : An overview of scenarios, possible problems and consequences that may occur when using industrial radio systems in different scenarios
Duration
