The Sustainable Transformation Seminars Autumn 2022 series is held monthly, usually on a Friday. The seminar series will continue to be online.

Seminar description

This seminar will introduce the concepts of servitization and digitalization and their role in achieving a more sustainable manufacturing industry by describing the momentum these concepts have in both research and industry. The speaker will present some of the stumbling blocks found in industrial scenarios which have limited the adoption of digital servitization in today’s industrial companies. Further, a set of stepping stones will be listed and exemplified, which include enabling technologies, organizational practices and a set of mitigation and contingency activities to deal with emerging risks. The findings presented in this seminar are extracted from several European and national research projects, as well as international academic collaborations which include cases in the manufacturing, recycling, and maritime shipping sectors.

After this seminar, the listeners will have acquired a new perspective on how digitalization paves the way for servitization, as a more sustainable business model. Also, they will benefit from several years of industrial and research collaborations by receiving a synthetized list of activities to bring the described concepts into practice.

Clarissa González is a PhD candidate in the Division of Production Systems at Chalmers University of Technology. Her doctoral journey started in September 2018. Her background includes a Bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering in CETYS Universidad and a Masters degree in Manufacturing Systems from Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.

Her research interests include the intersection of servitization and digitalization as means for achieving a more sustainable industry. She continuously explores the many challenges and opportunities of digital servitization in different industrial sectors, with a particular interest in the process of value co-creation and finding win-win situations.

Clarissa has participated in multiple academic exchanges, including Management Center Innsbruck in Austria, a research stay in Politecnico di Milano and extensive collaboration with the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge. Her research projects have been contextualized in several industrial sectors such as manufacturing, e-waste recycling, maritime shipping and fashion.

Connection to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's)

Clarissa’s research in digital servitization for sustainability is particularly inspired by SDG9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG12 Responsible Production and Consumption. Her research aims to bring light to the large responsibility of industrial actors to support the transition from unmeasured and linear consumption and production patterns to more sustainable practices. This is done by supporting their adoption of a more responsible strategy where the definition of value inherently considers the global sustainability objectives.

The research projects where Clarissa has participated have touched upon other goals, including SDG4 Quality of education, where some of the outputs of projects have prioritized the development of learning paths formed by nuggets where knowledge on sustainable business models enabled by digital technologies can be disseminated across organizations. Further, SDG 8 has been addressed in the projects with the recycling sector, where the project activities address ergonomic and safety concerns related to the manual recycling processes, challenging the pre-assumption that they should be required handling of e-waste.

Also, projects related to the maritime sector have addressed SDG14, where digital servitization could enable better solutions for the maritime shipping sector and protect our world’s natural resources and ecosystems. Finally, Clarissa’s activities have been driven by SDG17, where her collaborative and curious approach to research can connect with the European Commission’s direction of creating meaningful partnerships for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
