KTH's academic career support is research-based with starting points in the areas that are meritorious for the tenure track; scientific merit, pedagogical merit and management and collaboration. In addition, learning about gender equality and KTH's core values is also included.
The various activities are intended to serve as support in the further qualification to associate professor, professor and a further career at KTH.
Education within the career support:
Partners In Learning, PIL program
The program is paused in autumn 2025 as we work on developing the content. The next start is spring 2026.
The PIL program is aimed at those who are assistant associate professors. The concept of PIL is intended to symbolize forward-looking and favorable development. KTH has offered assistant lecturers at KTH to participate in the PIL program since 2012.
Purpose and objectives
PIL is a positive support for employees in the first stage of the tenure track and serves as preparation for promotion to associate lecturer. Partners-In-Learning aims to create an exchange between assistant lecturers and more senior employees at KTH. The focus is on academic leadership and their own development within the academy. The approach means that the PIL actors/participants create the content themselves to some extent based on identified knowledge needs.
PIL consists of meetings with an experienced partner who has a tenure track position and nine learning opportunities, which include a kick-off, an internship, six theme meetings and a conclusion. The scope is approximately 30 hours including the internship.

Within the framework of the career support for tenure track, leadership training is offered aimed at you as a lecturer. The training is aimed at all lecturers who are at the beginning of their careers as academic leaders.
Purpose and goals

About Tenure track
The academic positions at KTH are linked to the internationally established concept of Tenure Track.
The career path begins with a position as an assistant lecturer, for which a doctoral degree and postdoctoral experience are required. After approx. four years, an assistant lecturer has the right to be considered for promotion to lecturer, and if this is successful, to be permanently employed. After another period as lecturer, one can apply to be promoted to professor.
