Abstract

Recent developments in natural language processing and large language models allow the application of conversational AI in open-domain dialogues without restrictions on topics or contexts. This opens up new possibilities for using speech-based dialogue systems in therapy and healthcare in a way that simulates human-to-human communication.

Sanna Kuoppamäki will present findings from two research projects that explore the challenges and opportunities of using conversational AI systems for social and emotional well-being.

First, Sanna will present findings from the application of large language models in the prevention of loneliness among older adults, with a special focus on user experience, reciprocity and trust when interacting with conversational companion robots.

Secondly, Sanna will present the challenges and opportunities of using conversational agents in everyday domestic tasks in terms of agent proactivity and context awareness.

Building on these findings, she will present directions for future research areas in the use of conversational AI for social and emotional well-being with a diverse group of users and contexts: a conversational mindfulness application and a dialogue model for the prevention of eating disorders.
