Strained Intermediates and Chemical Education as Vehicles for Innovation

Professor Neil Garg will present the most recent efforts to utilize unconventional strained intermediates, such as cyclic allenes and cyclic 1,2,3-trienes, as building blocks for heterocycles and natural products. In addition, initiatives in the realm of chemical education will also be described.

Prof. Garg's research is focused on the chemical synthesis of organic compounds, with an emphasis on the development of new strategies for the preparation of complex molecules possessing unique structural, biological, and physical properties. His group has made breakthroughs in catalysis, especially strong bond activation of esters and amides using nickel catalysts, and in the understanding and utilization of strained intermediates, such as arynes, cyclic alkynes, and cyclic allenes.

About Neil Garg

Neil received a B.S. in Chemistry from New York University where he did undergraduate research with Professor Marc Walters. During his undergraduate years, he spent several months in Strasbourg, France while conducting research with Professor Mir Wais Hosseini at Université Louis Pasteur as a NSF REU Fellow. Neil obtained his Ph.D. in 2005 from the California Institute of Technology under the direction of Professor Brian Stoltz. He then joined Professor Larry Overman’s research laboratory at the University of California, Irvine as an NIH Postdoctoral Scholar after which he joined UCLA to start his independent career.
