Travel stipends in honour of Nils and Hans Backmark

In honor of her husband and son, KTH alumni Nils and Hans Backmark, Mrs Birgit Backmark donated 100 000 SEK per year for a period of 10 years to be used as travel grants for young KTH-employed researchers (both Doctoral Students and PhD graduates) in the fields of Microsystem Technology and Microelectronics at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).

Assessment criteria

  1.  Scientific assessment criteria.
    1. The trip or the exchange visit shall be of importance for the individual's scientific development.
    2. The trip or exchange visit shall contribute to strengthening the individual’s international research network.
    3. The trip or exchange visit shall not be naturally part of the individual's regular activities or included in the individual’s previous financial plans.
    4. Applications in microelectronics refer to general electronics/photonics e.g. microwave technology.
  2. Practical assessment criteria
    1. You may apply for short journeys (conferences, fairs, etc.) but also for longer exchange visits/stays at another university.
    2. You may apply for any amount up to the maximum limit of SEK 100,000 for application regarding Microsystem Technology or Microelectronics, depending on the nature of the trip. The year's pot will be awarded either to one or more candidates, depending on the received applications. The assessment committee will review the applications and recommend order of priority.

Applications must include

  1. Project Description:
    1. Shorter trip (conference, exhibition, workshop, etc.): Description of the material to be presented during the conference. State the personal contribution to the research results. Explain the relevance and utility of the results for your field of research.
    2. Alternatively, Exchange visit: Description of the project to be undertaken during the exchange visit at the institution abroad. Please describe the outcomes to be achieved during the stay and in what way they are to be achieved.
  2. Travel budget, with detailed indication of the travel costs. Allowance, however, may not be included in the application and will not be covered by the scholarship.
  3. The candidate's CV in brief.

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science awaits a travel report from you when the trip has been carried out, not later than two months after your return. The travel report should be sent by e-mail to
hr-support@eecs.kth.se. Please note J-2024-1008 and the name of the donor in your report.

Changing the destination is granted only in exceptional cases where the reason for the change is outside the applicant's control. Change request must be received before the original trip would have taken place. The Head of School decides to approve or reject the application.
