Course administration
Admission, registration, and course completion.
Coursework is an important part of doctoral education. Here you will find information on how you, as a doctoral student, should proceed and what you should consider when taking a course.
Admission and registration for courses
It is important that you always ensure approval from your main supervisor before registering for a course, and that the planned course is recorded in your ISP. Please note that registration of a course in the ISP does not mean that you have been admitted to the course.
How to register for a course
The most common procedure is that the doctoral student contacts the course coordinator directly to request participation in the course.
If the course coordinator approves your participation, you will be admitted and registered when the teacher submits a list of participating students to the school’s doctoral education administration. Alternatively, if you already have written approval via email, you may forward it to your school’s doctoral education administration, who will then admit and register you for the course.
Examination registration
If registration for an examination is required for the doctoral course, you must register during the registration period via your personal menu.
If the examination belongs to a master’s level course running in parallel with the doctoral course, and you cannot register via your personal menu, you must contact the school’s doctoral education administration at least two weeks before the examination period starts.
Students who have missed the registration deadline can find more information about written examinations here .
Grade reporting
After the course has been completed, the course examiner contacts the doctoral education administration for grade reporting. Shortly thereafter, the grade will be visible in the doctoral student’s Ladok record.
Interruption and re-registration
Doctoral students may register an interruption of a doctoral-level course at any time during the course period. With approval from the course examiner or teacher, and subject to availability, they may also apply for re-registration to resume the course at a later time. Doctoral students register course interruptions themselves in Ladok and may contact the school’s doctoral education administration for assistance with re-registration.
Mandatory courses within doctoral education
Within doctoral education, there are certain courses that are mandatory for all doctoral students within a specific subject area. These courses are intended to provide a fundamental and shared competence required for research training and future professional work.
To identify which courses are mandatory for you, you must consult the General syllabus for your doctoral subject area. The General syllabus specifies both the mandatory courses and any recommended or elective courses.
