How a centre is managed

Each centre has a director, who is responsible for the operation as a whole, as well as a general assembly and/or a steering committee.

General assembly

At centres where not all of the parties sit on the steering committee, the general assembly is the formal forum that has a say in the development of the centre. The general assembly makes decisions on and holds joint consultations on particular events that concern all parties in the centre. KTH is represented at the general assembly by the President, the Vice President for Research, or a representative specifically appointed by them in advance.

Steering committee

The role and mandate of the steering committee:

  • Responsibility for the strategic and long-term development of the centre, with the exception of Strategic Research Areas (SRAs) where the researchers themselves are responsible for their research agenda and priority initiatives, under the management of the director in dialogue with the steering committee.
  • Overall management of the centre’s operations based on the frameworks stated in the operational plan, cooperation agreements and funders’ requirements.
  • Adopting the centre’s annual operational plan and budget.
  • Adopting the centre’s communication plan.
  • Responsibility for agreed reporting and financial accounting.
  • Deciding on or recommending decisions regarding which projects should be implemented within the framework of the centre.
  • Ensuring that the centre is run in a proper and ethical manner.
  • Providing a forum for the parties’ views on the centre’s activities.
  • Responsibility for closing the centre when it ceases operating.

Role of the director

The director is responsible to the steering committee for ensuring that operations are run and comply with the administrative guidelines, regulations and delegations in place at KTH.

The director manages the centre’s funds and is financially responsible for the centre in accordance with the operational plan and budget adopted by the steering group.

The director is employed by KTH and has financial certification authority for the centre, according to the school’s delegation system. If the director is not employed by KTH, financial certification must be carried out by the head of school or a person designated by them.
