Information session on the EIC Pathfinder for KTH researchers
On April 21st at 10:00, the Research Support Office organizes an information session on the EIC Pathfinder open call for KTH Researchers interested. The invited speaker Bart Van Caenegem from the European Commission will focus primarily on EIC Pathfinder open calls (previously FET within Horizon 2020) and will bring up other relevant parts of the EIC-programme (third pillar of the Horizon Europe) relevant for academics. Even if you are not planning on applying this year, you should find this session relevant for the upcoming calls within the EIC-programme.

After its three-year pilot, the European Innovation Council (EIC) finally launched as a full-fledged €10 billion agency on 18 March.
The Pathfinder, which funds high-risk projects with breakthrough potential, will accept applications for research in any field until 19 May. A total of €168 million will be awarded in grants of up to €3 million in this bottom-up, open, call.
For the bottom-down call, there is €132 million for research consortia to apply for grants of up to €4 million by 27 October.
The EIC Pathfinder programme aims to support early-stage projects (TRL levels 1 to 4) that have the potential to create new markets and address global changes. With a high-risk/high gain approach, a consortium of minimum 3 partners from academia or industry can work together to develop an innovative technology, based on science-towards-technology breakthrough research, up to the point of proof of principle. The results obtained from the research should lead to top publication, and, it is expected that following the Pathfinder, measures will be taken to ensure the continuation of the project, such as generating Intellectual Property.
The Pathfinder sets out five challenges:
1. Awareness inside (projects scrutinising the idea of artificial intelligence consciousness);
2. Tools to measure and stimulate activity in brain tissue;
3. Emerging technologies in cell and gene therapy;
4. Novel routes to green hydrogen production;
5. Engineered living materials.
