SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

Over the past few decades, there has been a growing focus within the scientific community on reducing the use of fossil based materials and promoting sustainability. Bio-based polymeric precursors are increasingly seen as a key player in the transition from petroleum-based materials to new green polymeric materials derived from bio-based feedstock. Actually there are different strategies that could be followed to achieve sustainable Polymeric materials:

• Reduce single use of plastics and recycle;

• Following circular economy strategies;

• Use bio-degradable polymers;

• Exploit bio-based precursor for achieving new bio-based polymers;

During this seminar, these different strategies will be explained

Marco Sangermano took his Master Degree in Organic Chemistry at the University of Turin. He joined the Politecnico di Torino as a PhD student. He did his PhD on cationic photopolymerization of propenyl and vinyl ether monomers. He has been appointed as Associate Professor at Materials Science Department since December 2010. In 2007 he was granted with the Alexander von Humboldt grant and performed investigations on 2 hybrid materials and on epoxy coatings containing CNTs in Dresden, Germany.

Marco Sangermano main activities are in the field of photopolymerization, structure-properties relationships studies, tailoring formulations for achieving specific properties, surface modifications by employing fluorinated or silicone additives and preparation of nanostructured polymeric coatings. He is a co-author of over 350 papers on International journals with an h-index of 57.
