KTH celebrates 200 years in 2027

Since its founding in 1827, KTH, originally called the Technological Institute, has played an important role in the development of the Swedish society. As we approach the 200th anniversary, it's an opportunity to gather strength and draw inspiration from history to build a stronger institution for the future. We can use the anniversary to showcase our research and education and the societal benefits KTH contributes to, in order to strengthen engagement and interest in KTH.

What are the current plans?

The celebration will take place throughout the anniversary year 2027 and there is plenty of space in the calendar for initiatives and activities across different parts of the institution. Here is a description of what is already in the planning stages.

The Story of KTH

Work is ongoing to compile and tell KTH's history and role in society – past, present, and future. This material will be used partly for an anniversary coffee table book , as well as on the web, in social media, and in a physical exhibition.

A meeting place on Campus

As KTH approaches its 200th anniversary in 2027, the KTH Library is undergoing renovation, happening in stages from 2025 to 2027. The library’s entrance hall will become a lively space highlighting KTH’s history and current research in sustainability. The Ångdomen hall is being modernized and equipped with contemporary technology to serve as a welcoming venue for events, while all meeting rooms are getting refreshed interiors and updated equipment to encourage new types of collaboration. In this way, the library will naturally become a central gathering place when KTH celebrates its 200th anniversary.

THE World Academic Summit

In October 2027, KTH will host the Times Higher Education’s biggest event of the year, THE World Academic Summit. Each year this event gathers more 400 researchers and leaders from around 100 institutions worldwide.

Festivities!

We will celebrate KTH´s Bicentenary with activities where all are to feel the possibility to participate in both small and bigger events. Among other things, we plan for a party for all staff and art events throughout the campus, which will be ornamented and dressed to host all festivities taking place.

200 years, 200 names – and countless contributions

The KTH bicentenary celebrates groundbreaking research, technological breakthroughs and innovations that have influenced both Sweden and the wider world. But perhaps our most enduring contribution to the present is our alumni, faculty and staff – the dedicated engineers, architects, researchers, teachers, employees and leaders who, in countless ways, have contributed to the development of KTH and of society for more than two centuries.

Selecting 200 names from hundreds of thousands is, of course, an impossible task – but we aim to do our best to reflect the diversity and impact that KTH represents. This is our way of saying thank you – and of looking ahead with pride and anticipation to the next 200 years.

How can your department contribute to and benefit from the anniversary?

Does your department have activities that could fit into the anniversary? This could, for example, be scientific conferences, strategic projects, or a lab that deserves to be showcased. KTH does many activities during a normal year, and in 2027 these could be given an extra silver lining!
