KTH Language Award

KTH’s Language Policy aims to increase language awareness and multilingualism among students and staff, and to support KTH’s ambition to develop as a multilingual university. The KTH management wishes to recognize and reward individuals who have made significant contributions in the spirit of the language policy. It is now time to nominate candidates for the KTH Language Award 2025.

The award, presented annually by KTH’s Language Committee, is intended for a staff member or student who has made outstanding contributions in the spirit of the language policy. The aim is to highlight good examples where individuals have helped improve language quality, enhance language proficiency among students or staff, promote multilingual education and linguistic diversity, or develop and disseminate Swedish specialist language. The award raises awareness of language issues and the language policy at KTH, and demonstrates KTH’s commitment to linguistic quality, language proficiency, parallel language use, and linguistic diversity.

Nominate for the KTH Language Award 2025

The award will be presented for the first time in 2025, in connection with the Storträffen Meetup on 1 December 2025. The award consists of a diploma and a book.

The full nomination criteria are listed below. Both employees and students at KTH are welcome to nominate candidates.
Please send your nomination, including a motivation, by email to the chair of the award committee, Johan Silfwerbrand, at johan.silfwerbrand@byv.kth.se no later than Wednesday, 1 October 2025.

Nomination Criteria for the KTH Language Award

To be eligible for the award, the nominee must be a student or employee at KTH and have made outstanding contributions in the spirit of the language policy. This means contributing to one or more of the following areas:

  • improved language quality

  • improved language proficiency among students

  • improved language proficiency among staff

  • multilingual education and linguistic diversity

  • development and dissemination of Swedish specialist language

Particularly valuable are efforts that have had a significant impact within or beyond KTH.

Examples of potential award recipients include:

  • a researcher who has introduced the use of bilingual term lists (Swedish and English) within their research group

  • a teacher who develops Swedish-language course literature, thereby promoting Swedish professional terminology

  • a student who raised concerns about linguistic quality in education with their program director

  • a student or doctoral candidate who includes summaries and keyword lists in multiple languages (beyond Swedish and English) in their thesis or dissertation

  • a communications officer who initiated work on accessible and inclusive language on KTH’s website

  • a manager who supports and encourages language skills development among staff

  • a student or employee who has organized seminars, guest lectures, or other events related to language

KTH’s Language Policy

KTH’s language policy was adopted by the University Board in 2010 and has since guided language and language use at KTH. The KTH Language Committee, a permanent subcommittee of the Faculty Council, is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the policy and promoting awareness of its content throughout KTH. A revised version of the language policy is currently being developed.
