Doctoral Studies Initiative

In 2014-2015, KTH undertook a Doctoral Studies Initiative (DSI). In this project, doctoral studies at KTH were analysed with a view to identifying potential areas for improvement.

The project had three components: an analysis of strengths and weaknesses, a mapping of quality assurance procedures and a follow-up study of the doctoral programmes implemented at KTH in 2011. In addition, a series of quality seminars was held.

Conclusions and recommendations from the project are compiled in a summary report (pdf 437 kB) (Swedish only).

Key findings relate to the need for KTH to

  • build on existing structures (including the doctoral programmes) in quality assurance
  • spread examples of good practice
  • raise awareness about the intended learning outcomes for a doctoral degree
  • increase the supply of, and improve doctoral students’ access to, courses in generic and transferable skills
