With the public release of the chatbot ChatGPT the awareness of generative Artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential has increased drastically. It is now changing how we view and use digital technology. In this Lunch 'n' Learn webinar, Professor Peter Parnes, LTU, will dive into what generative AI is and the challenges and opportunities it entails within higher education. ChatGPT - the start of a new paradigm?
The company OpenAI released the chatbot ChatGPT to the public in November 2022, which has gained much attention ever since. This is mainly due to its well-written answers and detailed responses, which it produces using a language model named GPT-3.5. However, several challenges within education has since become more evident, e.g., on how we assess student performance. On the other hand, this type of technology also presents several opportunities to help teachers and students in their learning.
You can use different generative AI tools to generate various materials, including text, images, video, and code. The GPT-3.5 model, as well as similar models, do not have any factual knowledge and will happily fabricate information if that suits the context.
The use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools has increased rapidly, and ranges from students using it to write essays to software developers using it to produce code. Is this the start of a paradigm shift in the digital technology field? And if so, how will it affect us as an educational institution, government authority, and research centre – now and in the future?

It is necessary for us to understand this new technology, and its possible effects. How does generative AI technology work? What are the possibilities of using it, and what type of challenges comes with it? These are some aspects that Professor Peter Parnes will present in this webinar, focusing on teaching and learning in higher education.
