Assessment model for degree projects: AI-generated thesis or work process?

The project involves creating a revised assessment model for degree projects that also includes the work process itself, since the reliability of the examination must increase when thesis written by AI are submitted. Adapted guidelines for the use of AI in degree project courses are also included.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P4. Assessment and examination for learning

P1. Essential knowledge of the subject

Definitions of the principles

This project is implemented at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2517-ITM).

Project context

Theses are increasingly being submitted that appear to have been written entirely by AI. Assessment of a thesis must therefore also include the work process, in order to ensure the reliability of the examination. Teachers and students also need clear information about how AI can and may be used – where the possibility of using AI in a way that is beneficial to learning must also be included. This creates an opportunity to create knowledge – among both teachers and students – about how AI can be used in a correct, qualitative and effective way in the future professional role.

Purpose (outcome)

The aim of the project is to develop an assessment matrix for degree projects at advanced level so that the work process becomes a larger part of the grading and also to develop guidelines for how AI can and cannot be used based on the generic advice that KTH has developed. The project will also produce AI-generated comparison material that can be used to increase teachers' competence in generative AI. In the long run, this means increased competence among teachers and reliability and fairness in the examination.

Project results (output)

  • An assessment matrix that can be used in all Indek's degree projects at advanced level, which also includes the actual work process for the thesis (draft, meetings, seminars, etc.)

  • The same assessment matrix in an adapted form for publication on canvas for students (canvas page)
  • Simplified, summarised and adapted "Recommendation for the use of AI" (based on KTH's several different variants) for Indek's degree project courses
  • Test round of the above models during the degree project period VT26 (selection of courses) with collection of feedback from supervisors/teachers (selection)
  • AI-generated comparison material that can be used to increase teachers' competence in generative AI.
