Implications of AI tools in education

The project involves creating direct support for students and teachers in the use of AI in the learning process, by clarifying the logics and implications of such use. Already collected detailed data will be categorized and contextualized, so that a mapping and model can be developed.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P1. Essential knowledge of the subject

P4. Assessment and examination for learning

P10. Continuous competence development in the teaching role

This project is implemented at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2516-ITM).

Project context

Most students already work a lot with AI tools to solve problems in courses and for essays but have insufficient systematic understanding of its logic and implications. Many teachers may also lack such knowledge.

Detailed data has already been collected on students' use of various AI tools for information gathering, analysis, writing and presentation. This material needs to be categorized and contextualized, so that a mapping and model can be developed that clarifies the implications of each tool. The project does not intend to collect new data as the current focus includes the most common (nearly 20 in number) and with varying uses.

Purpose (outcome)

Purpose: To create a clear and supportive mapping and model of the implications of AI use in education, as direct support for AI use in the learning process.

Outcomes:
- Strengthen both students' and teachers' insight into how AI tools affect analysis and study skills.
- Provide guidance to students and teachers about the benefits and risks of using the tools in the studies.
- The model also serves as a basis for discussion and learning about AI use.

These outcomes lead to increased quality in students' work, increased security and reliability in teachers' assessment of students' work tasks, and increased AI understanding and awareness among both students and teachers.

Project results (output)

Clear and supportive model for both students and teachers who use different AI tools:

  • Mapping of different AI tools used by students in their studies
  • Identification of the different results of AI tools when used for problem-solving, analysis and essay writing.
  • Comparative categorization of outcomes of using AI tools in education.

The result can be used in almost all education as students, regardless of course, increasingly rely on different AI tools for information collection, analysis and presentation.
