Mentoring programme for future engineers

The project involves developing a mentoring programme with SI-pass, where first-year students in the bachelor programme in electrical engineering receive support from experienced students and staff and create an inclusive study environment that can lead to reduced dropouts and increased throughput.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P3. Active student-centred learning

P12. Broadened recruitment and participation

This project is implemented at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2507-EECS).

Project context

Following changes in the program programme offering at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), the TEIELA programme will become the only bachelor 3-year engineering program programme (HING) in electrical engineering at KTH, which is expected to increase the application pressure and admission scores. To improve the low throughput, a mentoring program programme with SI-pass (Supplemental Instruction) will be started.

The project will build on the results and experiences from the previous “All on board” project (2412-EECS).

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the mentoring programme, with the potential to be expanded to other HING programmes, is to:

  • strengthen the academic adaptation of newly admitted students, facilitate the transition to higher education and create a sense of belonging
  • reduce dropouts and increase student completion in first-year courses at the HING programme TIELA.

Project results (output)

  • Documented set-up for mentor meetings and SI passes (Supplemental Instruction) that provide support from experienced students and staff
  • Basis for further programme development.
