Current projects and initiatives within FuSam

On this page, major issues currently relevant within Doctoral Education Coordination (FuSam) are listed.

Process of Creating Course offering and Announcing Doctoral Courses

It has long been known that it is difficult to get an overview of KTH's course offerings at the doctoral level and when courses are offered. FuSam has been tasked with advancing greater coordination of the announcement and management of course sessions for established doctoral courses, with the aim of making the course offerings more trackable and providing more predictability for doctoral students' study planning.

In the spring of 2024, a working group continued the process mapping work that started in 2022 on behalf of the Educational Administrative Committee.

Process for External Doctoral Students in Doctoral Courses at KTH

The management of external doctoral students taking doctoral courses at KTH has been identified as unclear and cumbersome, generating many questions from applicants, course coordinators, and administrators. Therefore, in the spring of 2024, a working group within FuSam mapped the process for external doctoral students taking doctoral courses at KTH and identified desired improvements in the management.

Template for Dissertation Contents

KTH has so far had a template for dissertation covers but lacked a template for the contents. FuSam has gathered requests from various quarters for KTH-wide templates for dissertation and licentiate contents and covers, especially in light of our new graphic profile. Most institutions today have uniform templates for this. A working group has now been established, consisting of representatives from:

  • The library (KTHB)

  • The communications department

  • The doctoral council at THS

  • Doctoral education support at EECS

  • The doctoral council at EECS

  • MO

  • EDO

The work has so far included templates in Word. This work is now complete, and FuSam is continuing with potential common LaTeX templates. Using the templates is not mandatory but strongly recommended. The templates should be seen as support and guidance. The templates will soon be published on the following page:

It will also be indicated that questions and/or feedback on the templates should primarily be directed to the doctoral education officer at the doctoral student’s school. Colleagues within operational support can also contact the functional address for doctoral education coordination at KTH: fusam@kth.se

Language Courses in Doctoral Education

There have long been requests from various quarters at KTH to increase opportunities for doctoral students to study Swedish courses. Doctoral students already have the opportunity to take Swedish courses, but a working group has now been tasked with investigating how this can be facilitated and potentially formally included in doctoral education.

Since autumn 2023, the working group consists of representatives from:

  • Educational responsible from THS’s doctoral section,

  • Responsible for staff courses in Language and Communication,

  • Doctoral student at the school,

  • Coordinator, EDO,

  • Educational leader, Management Office, and

  • FA at the school.

The issue of increased opportunities for doctoral students at KTH to take Swedish courses is now being addressed by the Doctoral Education Committee and the Language Committee, with input from, among others, the working group.
