Managing support for students with disabilities
KTH values diversity and welcomes all students who meet the requirements to pursue their education. Individuals with a documented permanent disability should, as much as feasible, have the opportunity to study at KTH under the same conditions as their peers. This page explains the overall process for providing compensatory support for students with disabilities and outlines the reason for these recommended supports.
Accessibility requirements under the Discrimination Act
All students at KTH have been admitted based on the same evaluation process. The performance expectations for students throughout the programme remain consistent. As a public authority, we must ensure the organisation is accessible by implementing necessary adjustments. The Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) states that accessibility is inadequate "when a person with a disability is disadvantaged by an organisation not implementing reasonable accessibility measures to put that person in a comparable situation to persons without that disability."2
Determining what constitutes a reasonable adjustment is open to interpretation. The DO advises a comprehensive assessment based on the relevant laws and regulations applying to the organisation. Regarding facilities, both simple and more extensive measures may be required to comply with accessibility standards. Other factors in this overall assessment include the organization's financial and practical capabilities, the individual's relationship with the organisation, and the potential long-term benefits of the adjustment.
Information on which students have compensatory support
In the " Course Participants " service, you can see the different supports that students have been recommended by Funka. There are two different levels of authorisation:
- Examiners see information about the codes at individual level.
- Course managers, teachers and some administrators see information on the number of students with the codes. Course managers and teachers have access to the service if they have a current course session.
The "Course participants" service is available in the personalised menu under services. You may need to add the service via settings. If the service is not available, contact your school's administrator.
It is the student's responsibility to initiate contact with the teacher when these supports are to be utilised, no later than 16 working days into the course. Discussions can be held with the student and the disability officer in order to accommodate the support.
The following information is available to students regarding compensatory support: Funka - compensatory support for students with disabilities | Student
If you want support in the implementation of the support, please contact Funka .
Authorisation and refusal of compensatory aid
The examiner notifies the student of approval/rejection of support no later than 15 working days before the examination. In the case of continuous examination, e.g. test writing, the student is notified of approval/rejection within 7 working days if possible.
In case of rejection, the examiner needs to write a decision according to the following template: Beslut om kompensatoriska stöd vid examination (2024-09-05) (docx 310 kB)
The decision must be based on the fact that the support goes against the learning objectives of the course.
Students in need of major adjustments during examination and teaching
Some students have great needs for different kinds of adaptations, usually due to physical disabilities. To facilitate the student and the examiner/teacher, the funka administrator will convene examiners and UA/SVL for all courses in the coming semester to inform and discuss the needs of the student. This is an individual assessment. Decisions are made well in advance, which means that the student is informed of what support will be granted.
If the examiner sees that this need exists, they are welcome to contact Funka who can coordinate such a meeting.
