Eladio Dieste (1917-2000) and his partner, Eugenio Montañez (1916-2001), were key figures within the ideal of emancipation of Latin American architecture and engineering in the second half of the 20th century. Through the invention of a construction system called ceramica armada (reinforced ceramics), they were engineers who contributed to the creation of landmark works for South American architecture. Reinforced ceramics became a constructive alternative to reinforced concrete and metal structures in the execution of modernization infrastructure in Uruguay - their homeland - Argentina and Brazil.
The fruit of research that has been going on for more than 10 years, this lecture aims to establish Dieste & Montañez's dialogue, above all with Brazilian architecture, through the presentation of unpublished or little-known works, analyzing the constitution of a specific Latin American modernity.
The lecture is hosted by the KTH School of Architecture and the Master Level Orientation course in History, Theory and Technology of Architecture themed Architectural Technology Re-Orientation and is open to the public.
