Updates in Canvas and news from E-learning ahead of Autumn 2026

Published Aug 18, 2026

Canvas has several new updates, such as an accessibility checker as a feature in the course menu and improved rubrics. In New Quizzes there are improved opportunities to provide feedback on specific answer options, and partial points for categorization questions. Those who are interested can try the new peer review tool and can keep an eye out for the possibility of more specific lockdown in KTH Digicertus Exam.

Don't miss

Group web will close on October 1

Don't forget that the group web will be shut down on October 1st. After that, you will be able to save material from groups, but you will not be able to read, edit or publish to them.

Accessibility Checker for courses

The Course Accessibility Checker is now available as a feature in the Canvas course menu. This tool allows you to review text-based content in your course to identify common accessibility issues. The tool also provides suggestions on how to fix any deficiencies. Accessibility Checker was previously available as a built-in tool in the text editor, but is now easier to find.

Enhanced Rubrics

The “Enhanced Rubrics” feature has been enabled in Canvas since spring 2026. The interface has been updated and the workflow has been partially changed for how you create, edit, and use rubrics.

Some of the major new added features in Enchanced Rubrics include:

  • Better overview of rubrics and which assignments they are linked to.
  • The rubric view in SpeedGrader can be displayed in several different viewing modes (vertical, horizontal, and traditional), which makes the interface more suitable for smaller screens.
  • Ability to save a rubric as a draft.
  • Import and export rubrics in CSV format.
  • Archiving rubrics that you no longer need to use, but do not want to delete if you want to reuse them in the future.

Note! If you prefer the traditional rubric feature, you can disable Enhanced Rubrics under "Feature Options" in the course settings.

Improved feedback options in New Quizzes

Several minor improvements have been made to how feedback can be given when students answer questions in New Quizzes.

Specific feedback for Multiple Answer Questions

In New Quizzes, you can now provide specific feedback for each answer option for multiple answer questions. This gives you, as a teacher, the ability to provide further explanation as to why a student's answer option was correct or incorrect.

Partial credit for Categorization questions

An update has also been made to allow partial credit for categorization questions. This means that students do not have to get it all right to get points, but instead receive points for each correctly categorized choice.

Notebook for students

Now students can make personal notes on pages in Canvas rooms. They can mark text as "Important" or "Unclear" and write their own comments. They can see all their marked parts under "Notebook". This is especially useful for students if a large part of the material that students will be working with is located as pages directly in Canvas. You as the teacher will not see the students' notes.

Option to test new version of Peer Review

Canvas has released a new version of Peer Review with improved functionality compared to the current version. As a teacher, you can activate the new version in your course room through the “Feature options” tab in your settings, where you click on “Peer Review Allocation and Grading”.

The new version gives you the opportunity to give students points for completing peer review, and it also becomes clearer for students to see peer review as an assignment. It also has major changes in how peer review is assigned to students.

KTH Digicertus Exam: lockdown to specific examination room on the way

During the summer, we have been working on enabling more specific lockdown at KTH Digicertus Exam (examination in a locked computer room). The solution means that you as a teacher can go to the menu option "KTH Digicertus Exam" in the examination room and mark that the lockdown should only give access to that room in Canvas. If you do not do this, the lockdown will be the same as before, that is, only to Canvas in general.

The solution is being tested during the re-examination period in August and is planned to be available for the next examination period (in October).

Keep an eye out for updates on the KTH Digicertus Exam pages .
