Scanned exams to Canvas
To use KTH Import Exams, go to the examination room connected to the exam and start the function. The function first prepares the examination room with a front page and an assignment in which the exams will be uploaded. Afterwards, the exams can be imported. You can leave the function at any time and come back to it later.
What is KTH Import Exams?
KTH Import Exams helps you to import scanned written exams into Canvas so that they can be assessed digitally in SpeedGrader. It also works with anonymous exams, in which case the Canvas assignment is automatically created with the setting anonymous assessment. The function can be run several times – for example, if not all exams are completed at the same time.
The function can be used by people who have the roles of teacher, examiner or course coordinator in the examination room.
Note! The function does not work in merged examination rooms.
Quick guide: How to use KTH Import Exams
Follow the steps below to import the exams into the examination room. Later on the page there are headings that describe the steps in more detail.
- Go to the correct examination room in Canvas and open KTH Import Exams in the left menu.
- Prepare the examination room with KTH Import Exams (four steps).
- Import the exams (when they have been scanned).
- Assess the exams in SpeedGrader.
You can pause and resume work later at any time. Steps 1-3 can be done before the examination is carried out, but it is not necessary.
Find and start the function and KTH Import Exams
You can find the function in the examination room for the exam in question. If you do not find the examination room, keep in mind that only the examiner for a course is added to the examination room when it is created. Read more about examination rooms .
In the examination room, in the left navigation menu, select the option "KTH Import Exams". Open the app by pressing the "Launch app" button. Allow the feature to be used for your account (this only needs to be done the first time).
Prepare the examination room using KTH Import Exams
After you have started KTH Import Exam, there are four steps to prepare the examination room. The four steps are there to give you the opportunity to choose settings and customize how the examination room will look for the students. If what the feature creates is right for you, you can just click through the steps. KTH Import Exams completes the following when you click through each step:
- Creates the front page for the examination room. If you already have a front page, you can skip this by clicking on "Skip this step".
- Publishes the course room (so students see it).
- Creates a Canvas assignment that the exams will be imported to.
- Publishes the assignment (it is not open for student submissions).
Please check the examination room before proceeding to import. For example, you may want or need to change the information on the front page or the task description.
Import the exams
When you get to the import step, you'll see how many exams are ready to import. Click "Start Import!" to start the import. You can leave the page and come back later to see how the import went.
After the import, information is provided if there have been any problems during the import. An example of a problem is if students who have not registered for the examination have written the exam. These students are not in the examination room which means their exams cannot be imported. The function will give you the opportunity to add these students to the examination room so that their exams can be imported. Note! Results for students added in this way cannot be transferred with KTH Transfer to Ladok.
Assess the exams in SpeedGrader
Once the exams have been imported into Canvas, you can start grading them with SpeedGrader. All exams are marked as submitted at the same time. If a student accidentally uploads something during the short open period during the import, it is marked as a late submission.

The function’s development
The underlying reason for the project KTH Import Exams is to let teachers avoid handling large amounts of paper when conducting exams and instead handle results and assessment digitally. Digital assessment makes it easier for students to access the assessment and makes it possible to sync the result directly to Ladok instead of manually entering results.
The project to produce KTH Import Exams has carried out a number of pilots in 2021 and developed from there. Some examples of design choices are:
- Create value quickly, detailed settings and more advanced features are planned to be developed at a later date so that teachers will quickly have the opportunity for digital assessment.
- The exams are only read into Canvas if they are going to be assessed there. The examiner or teacher decides when / if the scanned exams are to be imported.
- The function works as an LTI app and the exams are imported into examination rooms so that the benefits of the right settings of, for example, Manual grade posting policy and the right grading scheme can be used.
- Personal identity numbers shall not be necessary for functionality. This enables the system to work together with anonymous written exams.
