Amelie about 2MiLab

Published Apr 26, 2023

Head of School Amelie Eriksson Karlström writes about 2MiLab and the advantages of a joint research infrastructure.

This week I visited the inauguration of 2MiLab , which is short for Molecules and Materials at Interfaces Laboratory. Many at the school – like myself – took the opportunity to come and mingle and look at the new labs. 2MiLab is a research infrastruture that consists of a number of different instruments that can be used to characterize surfaces and materials. At the opening, we had the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the laboratories, where some of the school's researchers and students showed the instruments and told us what they could be used for.

Some of the techniques available and presented on the tour are XPS, AFM, QCM-D, TEM and SEM. These are instruments that are often too expensive to buy in for a single research group, and therefore a common instrument park can be a good solution. In addition to users from KTH, it will be possible for external users to gain access to the infrastructure. 2MiLab has an impressive collection of advanced instruments that I hope will be used extensively in the school's research and education!
