Mikael on the financial statements and the start of 2021

Published Jan 15, 2021

CBH's Head of School Mikael Lindström writes about the start of 2021, Covid-19, the school's financial statements for 2020 and the research policy bill that was recently presented.

A warm welcome back after the Christmas holidays and a good continuation of the New Year. A year that at least in the beginning will be different from ordinary years. As you know, the spread of Covid-19 is still high in the Stockholm area and we who can are asked to work remotely at least until 24 January. Please see the website for continuous updates. A decision from the KTH President is being prepared on what campus attendance will look like after 24 January.

We have just finished the financial statements and many thanks to all of you who contribute to our operations. The financial outcome for the CBH School was SEK +11.2 million for 2020, which is better than the budget for 2020, which was SEK -14.9 million. Both revenues and expenses are higher than the budget entered. The basic education outcome was SEK -24.0 million for 2020. What makes the positive results for CBH possible is a surplus from research and postgraduate education.

  • The research policy bill has also been presented and here is a short summary:
  • Focus on societal challenges: Covid-19, climate and environment, health and welfare, digitization, skills supply and working life, as well as a democratic and strong society.
  • Several initiatives are implemented through the so-called ten-year national research programs, either by strengthening existing programs or by setting up new ones.
  • A new model for the distribution of basic appropriations is introduced from 2023. The new model deviates from indicators and parts of the higher education institutions' grants for research and education at the doctoral level shall be distributed on the basis of expert review and profiling.
  • Proposals for amendments to the Higher Education Act (1992: 1434) to strengthen and clarify the university's responsibility for collaboration, internationalization and lifelong learning, and to promote and safeguard academic freedom in the university's activities. The amendments to the law are proposed to enter into force on 1 July 2021.

Total increase of SEK 3.75 billion in 2024 in comparison with the current level. Increase in resources is distributed as follows:

  • Directly to higher education institutions: SEK +953 million in 2024
  • VR: +1 505 million 2024
  • The Swedish Space Agency: +30 million 2024
  • Vinnova: +614 million 2024
  • Forms: +360 million 2024
  • Forte: +180 million 2024
  • RISE AB: +75 million 2024
  • Financial market research: + SEK 30 million 2024

For CBH, there are interesting reinforcements in all our profile areas; health, environment, energy and materials.
