Amelie on applying for research funding

Published May 07, 2025

CBH's Head of School Amelie Eriksson Karlström talks about writing applications to research funders and about which funders are the biggest.

During the spring, many of CBH's employees have been writing applications to the major external research funding bodies, for example to this year's calls from the Swedish Research Council and Formas. Writing applications can be both stressful and difficult, but it is an important task since more than half of the CBH School's income is made up of external funds and enables our successful research.

In 2024, the CBH School's largest external research funders were the Wallenberg Foundations, the Swedish Research Council, the EU, VINNOVA, the Swedish Energy Agency, SSF and Formas. However, as the School's departments have different research profiles, the distribution of funders varies between departments. At KTH level, it is largely the same research funders that dominate, with the Swedish Research Council as the largest funder. In 2024, KTH had a good outcome for applications to the Swedish Research Council, with the third largest amount of funding granted in total among Swedish universities.

The funding bodies that have become most important for KTH in recent years are the EU, where KTH has been very successful, and the Wallenberg Foundations, where KTH participates in several large KAW-funded research programmes, such as DDLS and WiSE. I keep my fingers crossed for everyone who has written applications this year and hope that the CBH school can continue to be successful in future calls!
