Amelie on research ethics

Published Nov 08, 2023

This week, the school's management team had a visit from Fredrik Karlsson, Research Ethics Advisor at KTH, and Aména Archer, a researcher at CBH with a special assignment from the life science platform to act as an ethics advisor to KTH researchers in connection with research on animals and humans that requires ethical authorisation.

Examples include studies that may have a physical or psychological impact on human subjects, analysing biological samples or handling sensitive personal data. Most of our researchers are aware of which experiments require ethical authorisations, but if you are unsure of what applies, you can contact the ethics advisors at researchethics@kth.se . For example, not everyone is aware that you may need to apply for a permit from the Swedish Ethical Review Authority if you are analysing traceable biological samples in Sweden, even if there is an ethical permit for the collection of the samples in another country.

Sometimes it can be tricky to navigate the regulations and determine whether the research is affected by the Ethical Review Act, the Biobank Act or the GDPR. If you are unsure, contact our ethics advisors for help along the way!
