Amelie on specialised maker environments

Head of School Amelie Eriksson Karlström writes about the President's decision to establish specialised maker environments and about CBH's maker environment in Flemingsberg.

In recent years, various ideas about maker spaces have been discussed at KTH, with the aim of giving students better access to experimental environments for their own work, e.g. for solving tasks in project courses. The President has now decided to establish five specialised maker spaces, one at each school at KTH.

The plan is for these experimental environments to be built over the next year and be ready for inauguration in early 2027, in conjunction with KTH's 200th anniversary. At the CBH School, we have had a well-functioning maker environment in Flemingsberg for several years, which is well integrated with research and education on this campus. Work will now begin to see if this initiative can be expanded so that all CBH students, including those in the chemistry and biotechnology clusters, can have access to maker environments.

The conditions and needs vary across the school's different educational areas, but the goal is still for all students to have access to experimental environments for their own work. The school's working group for maker environments is led by Deputy Head of School Sebastiaan Meijer, and it will be exciting to see how the concept can be developed further!
