Mikael on the Head of School appointment

Published Oct 14, 2021

Head of School Mikael Lindström writes about the process around the Head of School appointment and CBH's development over the past four years.

As you know, my appointment as head of the CBH School expires on the last day of December 2021. I have then been the Head of School for four years after the reorganization of KTH's schools. The proposal from the President of KTH is that I continue to be trusted for another four-year period. The process and the anchoring of the re-appointment in the organization will be carried out by the permanent nomination group for the appointment of Heads of School (President’s decision V-2019-0649).

On Monday, I met with the permanent nomination group and we discuss the vision and strategy for the CBH School the coming four-year period. We started with a look back and a summary. We have achieved a lot since we became a school four years ago and now it is starting to feel that CBH means something. I am extra proud of how we at CBH have managed to uphold education, research and collaboration during the pandemic. We have also succeeded well with our faculty recruitments during the CBH era, and in 2021 we have made 11 employments, of which 7 are women. This year alone we are growing by 10 percent in terms of external grants and we are KTH's most highly cited school. We also train the most doctors per faculty. This is definitely not done alone so many thanks to you all!

When it comes to looking ahead, we have challenges when it comes to a university being both education, research and collaboration. CBH has a smaller educational volume than other schools at KTH. We do the educational part very well and it is important that we balance it with our successful research. The large external research grants require co-financing with our common resources and here more proactive work is needed with common themes both within our school and between schools at KTH.

Now the permanent nomination group will interview key people, heads of department and the chairman of the school board to listen to thoughts and reflections. Thereafter, the permanent nomination group will agree on a recommendation to the President, who will make a formal decision.

Questions and comments can be sent to the group's chairman Professor Monica Ek ( monicaek@kth.se ).
