Discussions about the present and future at MTH Day
On 15 December, MTH Day was held at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems. To kick off the day, Gustav Amberg presented his report on KTH's future presence in Flemingsberg.
"There is no reason to do anything dramatic; no one will have to move. There are many opportunities here that people on Valhallavägen are unaware of. I have also received this information from President Anders Söderholm," says Professor Gustav Amberg, who has been commissioned by the President of KTH to investigate KTH's future in Flemingsberg.
The report will be submitted to President Anders Söderholm before the end of the year and will be discussed by his management team in January.
"Where Stockholm is growing"
According to Gustav Amberg, professor at KTH who was also recently rector of Södertörn University, KTH has a natural place in this knowledge-intensive development area, where several educational institutions and Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge are located.
“There is a reason for KTH to be here, and there is a difference compared to Kista and Södertälje. There are many players who want to build a city in Flemingsberg. Of the planned regional city centres, Flemingsberg is the one that is receiving the most attention – this is where Stockholm is growing. However, the area needs to become more liveable in the evenings, even for those who do not intend to visit the hospital," Amberg says.
Pensions and laboratories
The department day at Biomedical Engieernig and Health Systems, MTH, continued with workshops for both faculty and operational support staff.
The topics discussed by the representatives of the department were faculty development, laboratory development and forms of examination. The discussions addressed issues such as the long-term development of the teaching staff in relation to future teaching and research needs, and how MTH employees can best utilise and share the lab equipment and laboratory space available at the department.
Link to the reform agenda
These issues are closely linked to CBH's recently updated reform agenda and the needs and skills assessment of school teachers that has been initiated, as well as the important issue of access to research infrastructure and its financing and operation.
"MTH is a relatively young institution with a lot of innovative energy in both research and teaching. Together, we have identified new things we need to do in the future, building on the foundation we have laid," says Sebastiaan Meijer, MTH's Head of Department.
After lunch, there were pitch presentations on what had happened at the department's various divisions during the year, and the day ended with an open house for MTH students, with poster presentations by doctoral students and open labs.
Valuable insights
Sebastiaan Meijer believes that the day was rewarding and that valuable insights have been gained for the work ahead in 2026.
"Everyone works hard, so it's easy to stick to what's most important this week, but now we had the opportunity to look ahead and create a common language for the future of MTH," Meijer says.
