Research infrastructures are increasingly important

Published Nov 24, 2021

Research infrastructure (RI) is of fundamental importance for outstanding research. In order to be able to conduct world-class research and education, KTH is dependent on long-term sustainable RI at the forefront of technology that are open to users and driven by professional leadership. Malin Hedengran, Senior Research Advisor RSO, is the coordinator for KTH research infrastructures.

The past few years KTH has taken several steps to ensure that research and education have access to equipment and instruments in strategically important areas.

- We formed a working group led by Mikael Östling, KTH Deputy President to establish a long-term strategy with internal calls and evaluations on criteria such as scientific and industrial relevance, number of users and inclusivity, long-term planning and quality development, explains Malin Hedengran and continues.

- This has proven valuable and we received good feedback in the RAE on how we support and develop the KTH established research infrastructures. Long-term sustainability and collaboration is important for RI on all levels, since the cost for the RI´s possibilities to meet the need for world-class research is becoming a larger part of the overall cost to conduct state-of-the-art research and to address large societal challenges.

KTH RI successful in getting funding from the Swedish Research Council

The Swedish Research Council (VR) performs an inventory of the national requirements for research infrastructures in Sweden every other year. Both higher education institutions, public authorities with research responsibility, research funding bodies and research teams can make proposals of requirements for novel RI assessed on the scientific qualities and strategic / national value.

In the 2021 evaluation round KTH was very successful and was granted all proposals:

  • Petra III Swedish node (KTH coordinating)
  • InfraVis (coordinator Chalmers)
  • Swedish National Data service (coordinator GU)
  • Fusion reactors ITER & DEMO (coordinator Chalmers)
  • ARTEMI (coordinator LiU)
  • HUMINFRA (coordinator LU)
  • Proteinproduktion Sverige (coordinator GU
  • SwedNMR (coordinator GU)
