Policy for external guests use of KTH's network

This policy describes the rules that apply to external users of KTH's network. The main idea is that the same regulations apply to external computers and users during the time they use KTH's network that normally apply to KTH's own users and computers. No special rules also apply to companies that rent premises from KTH, but the computers and their users are connected on an individual basis.

All guests who connect their computers to KTH's network are obliged to comply with the regular rules that apply to users and computers, such as e.g. the liability for the use of KTH's computer, network and system resources. In particular, the policy for self-administered computers also applies, since a guest computer in this context is considered equivalent to a self-administered computer. Please note that this means that KTH has the right to switch off the computer or block network access at any time, if deemed necessary, e.g. for safety reasons.

Guest computers may only be used as a personal work tool. No servers or services related to the business of the company or institute may be on them. However, it is permitted to have services for personal use.

  • Examples of prohibited services: Web, DNS, Secondary DNS, Mail
  • Examples of allowed services: Remote Desktop, X server, NX, VNC

Guests employed at external companies, institutes or similar

Guests employed by external companies, institutes or the like who collaborate with a school or department at KTH can be given access to KTH's computer network. If it concerns more than a temporary visit (one day), there must be a responsible contact person. This must be seen as the host of these guests and must know their activities and be contacted if the guests cannot be reached. The head of department or the equivalent must also have given his approval. The IT manager at the school and the IT department must have approved the network access in advance and there must always be a responsible person for each computer that is connected. KTHLAN and SUNET fees for these computers must be paid by the school according to the current rules.

If the content of this policy cannot be reconciled with the business, the company, institute or equivalent must acquire its own network in consultation with the IT department. (Currently, this normally means that the IT department ensures that ADSL is routed to the premises.)
