Secure your KTH Microsoft 365-account with multifactor authentication (MFA)
Here you will find instructions on how to secure your account with multi-factor authentication (MFA) for KTH's Microsoft 365 services.
In the text below, the abbreviation MFA is used for multi-factor authentication.
If you need to use MFA on your KTH account in Microsoft 365 to provide extra security for external or internal services, you can follow the instructions below to enable MFA.
Prerequisites for being able to activate MFA for your KTH account
You will need to have a personal mobile phone with IOS or Android.
The mobile phone must have an internet connection (via Wifi or 4G/5G).
Limitations
- We do not allow SMS as a multifactor at KTH.
- You also can't use Yubikey as a multifactor.
- You can not use Google authenticator or other 3rd party applications as a multifactor.
- We only support Microsoft Authenticator as a multifactor.
Instructions for activating MFA on KTH account
Step 1. Before you can enable MFA on your account, you must install the Microsoft Authenticator application on your phone.

Step 2. After installing Microsoft Authenticator on your phone, follow the instruction below to enable MFA on your account.
Instructions
- Make sure your mobile phone and computer have internet connection.
- Launch a browser and click on the link to start the configuration of MFA (link opens in new window).
- Log in as username@ug.kth.se
After you have entered your username, you will be redirected to KTH's login service.
- Enter your KTH password
- After signing in, the MFA registration process begins.
- Follow the instructions to set up your account.
Make sure you installed the Microsoft Authenticator application on your phone before moving on. - Click Next/Nästa to start MFA setup for your account
- Click Next/Nästa when you get to this page
- On this page you will find the QR code that you will use to register your mobile phone with Microsoft Authenticator.
- Use the Authenticator app to scan the QR code.
Watch the video below on how to configure your mobile phone - After setting up your phone, click Next/Nästa.
- Now it is validated that your phone is configured correctly by sending a notification to the Microsoft Authenticator application.
- Open the Authenticator application on your phone and there you should have received a notification.
- If you received the notification and it has been approved, click Next/Nästa.
- You have now managed to set up your account with MFA, click Done/Klar.
- The configuration of MFA is now complete for your account.
