Pär Olsson Appointed Knight of the Order of Academic Palms
Professor Pär Olsson has been appointed Knight of the prestigious French order of merit, the Order of Academic Palms (Ordre des Palmes Académiques). This distinction, confirmed by a decision of the Prime Minister of the Republic of France, recognizes his personal commitment and numerous contributions to French culture and the strengthening of French-Swedish scientific and academic cooperation.
France’s high esteem and gratitude for his work and dedication are reflected in the award. The ceremony took place at the French ambassador’s residence in Stockholm on November 17.
What does this award mean to you?
"Receiving such recognition is a huge honour and feels fantastic. I have always been driven by working with things that are fun, interesting, and meaningful to society. The fact that this has been noticed and recognised in this way by such an important and central player in the nuclear energy field feels surreal."
"The ceremony at the French residence was wonderful, and they generously allowed me to invite my family, friends, and colleagues. I will cherish this as an incredibly special memory for a long time to come. Of course, all of this is thanks to the wonderful people I work with, who always deliver and who have built an exceptionally positive culture of collaboration."
Can you tell us a little more about your collaboration with France?
"We almost always work internationally, and France is the most natural partner in nuclear energy, both in education and in research. I came to KTH after spending five years working in French industry, at EDF R&D, following my doctorate. Since then, I have stayed in close contact and have actually built up many more collaborations with French partners during my time at KTH than I had when I was working there. Representing KTH and Swedish interests in various collaborations has been very enriching for both sides, and we continue to work together on many different levels."
What is next?
"I will be travelling to Paris on 1 December to participate in the Swedish Chamber of Commerce’s anniversary and technology day for French–Swedish collaborations. We are working to turn the bilateral agreement signed between the countries a year ago into concrete action, so there is a lot happening in this area."
