Course rooms are linked to the start of the course instead of the period
From Spring 2022, how the course room is handled in Canvas is based on the start date of the course instead of the period. This change affects how far in advance the course rooms are available for teachers and students and when unregistered students are removed from the course room.
Date for the course start decides instead of the period
From Spring 2022, the date the course starts will be determine when course rooms in Canvas are created and when students are admitted to and removed from the course rooms. Previously, this has been determined by the period in which the courses are in, but it will now be anchored in when the course starts to be more adapted to each course.
Most courses are minimally affected by this change.
Consequences for you as a teacher
All course rooms in Canvas are created no earlier than 270 days before the start of the course, if they are approved in Kopps. Otherwise they are created one day after approval. Teachers, course coordinators and examiners are added to the course room when it is created, if they are registered in Kopps, otherwise they are added after registration.
You as a teacher thus get access to the course room for editing 270 days before the course starts, regardless of when your course starts in the period. For example:
- For courses starting at 18 January 2022, the course rooms were created 23 April 2021.
- For courses starting at 24 January 2022, the course rooms were created 29 April 2021.
We also recommend that you as a teacher inform your students about the change in when unregistered students are removed from the course room in Canvas, which is explained below.
Consequences for students
Students are admitted to the course rooms as early as when the course room is created, 270 days before the course starts, if they are correctly added in Ladok. As students only see the course after you as a teacher have published the course room, they will not notice this change.
A more obvious change for students is that students who have not registered for the course in Ladok will be removed from the course room four days after the start of the course. Previously, unregistered students were removed three days before the end of the course registration period, but now it is bound to the start of the course instead. Here are two examples:
- If the course starts on 18 January (Tuesday), unregistered students will be removed from Canvas on the morning of 22 January (Saturday).
- If the course starts on 24 March (Thursday), unregistered students will be removed on the morning of 28 March (Monday).
