Iterative learning format for sustainability competences

The project involves developing a learning platform for sustainability competence within the framework of lifelong learning, with a curriculum, learning, teaching and assessment materials, in collaboration with Scania. As continuation, a pilot will be done on the company’s own platform.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P13. Integrated lifelong learning

P5. Available experimental environments

P9. A developing educational culture

This KTH-wide project was implemented within the Future Education programme (project no. 2410-KTH).

Project context

The project has its background in that Scania and KTH established a working group for education during the pandemic, which later developed into a Learning Steering Group. As a result of the success of the Sustainable Transport Systems course, it became apparent that there was a need for a platform to support participants after completing the course. However, the current course format has limitations in terms of scalability and cost-effectiveness.

Purpose (outcome)

The aim of the project is to develop an iterative learning format for sustainability competence in collaboration with Scania, which includes learning sprints and social learning. The proposed format involves a transition from formal courses to quality-assured collective learning. It is partly similar to study circles with predefined cycles of study materials and workshops led by facilitators. This involves new and scientifically anchored forms of lifelong learning that go beyond the traditional approach with courses as the predefined artifact where learning takes place. The impact objectives are:

  • Long-term create a learning culture that encourages continuous improvements, activities and innovation in the area of sustainability.
  • Enable and encourage cross-functional collaborations and knowledge sharing to achieve sustainability goals.

Project results (output)

  • Defined learning objectives, e.g. understanding key concepts in sustainability, applying sustainable principles in different professional roles and identifying opportunities for sustainable solutions.
  • Developed curriculum including learning formats and learning activities with course materials and course elements.

Project continuation:

  • Prepared first pilot round of the learning platform.
  • Scientific evaluation of the learning format's effect on sustainability competence.
