Human-computer interaction with free start and free pace

The project will develop a MOOC course in human-computer interaction (HCI) that offers a quality-assured alternative to external applicants to Master's programmes with HCI as a prerequisite. The course's format and scope also make it attractive for course participants from professional life.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P1. Essential knowledge of the subject

P4. Assessment and examination for learning

P12. Broadened recruitment and participation

P13. Integrated lifelong learning

This project is implemented at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2408-EECS).

Project context

Strong external applicants to the Master’s programme in Interactive Media Technology (TIMTM) are sometimes not accepted because they do not meet the requirement for knowledge in human-computer interaction (HCI), often because the subject is not available at their home university or in their home country. This is unfortunate for the programme, which, due to its interdisciplinary nature, strives to admit students from diverse backgrounds and thrives on a mix of students.

Purpose (outcome)

The aim of the project is to develop a short introduction to HCI in MOOC format (Massive Open Online Course) with free start and free pace, that offers external applicants to the TIMTM Master's programme a quality-assured alternative to meet the entry requirements and also makes the course attractive as a continuing education course for participants from working life. The impact objectives include: increased diversity among those admitted to the programme, a further education alternative in a scope and format suitable for life-long learning. The course will use automated and student-led learning and examination forms to the greatest extent possible.

Project results (output)

  • A 3 hp course in HCI in MOOC format with free start and free pace, inspired by the course DH1621, and taking maximum advantage of automated and student-led forms of learning and examination
  • An example of (largely) automated assessment and examination of qualitative tasks
  • Well-produced educational content that can be reused within the framework of several different courses and that can constitute a good basis for marketing and communication of the subject area.
