High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) grids are a key technology for bulk power transfer, for example, from offshore windfarms, or for reinforcing the existing electricity grid. Today, HVDC systems cannot be built plug&play because the underlying power electronic technology has, on the one hand, sensitive hardware, but on the other hand, software-defined behavior. Interesting challenges are how to achieve re-configurable control and protection, as well as understanding new control and protection interaction phenomena. This docent lecture will give a brief summary of HVDC grid aspects as well as ongoing and future research.
