Curbside and sidewalk spaces are important components of urban transport infrastructure, yet they have often been overlooked in research. From a city logistics perspective, trucks cruising for parking and double-parking delivery operations are major contributors to traffic congestion in dense urban areas. Addressing these issues calls for innovative solutions that improve delivery operations and explore alternative delivery modes to the status quo. With recent advancements in connectivity, sensing, and communication technologies, cities and logistics operators have an unprecedented opportunity to transform urban freight systems. This talk will explore how methodological tools, including simulation, optimization, and machine learning, can help us better understand and optimize urban freight transportation, paving the way for smarter, more sustainable cities.
