Traditionally, tissue biopsies are analysed by pathologists to asses tissue morphology and tumor subtypes. In addition, immuno histochemistry can be used to stain for specific proteins to further characterise the tumor. With fluorescence based multiplexed imaging, up to 50 markers can be analysed within the same tissue section and help to better understand the tumor microenvironment. This can provide in depth information relevant in selecting the best treatment option for a patient. However, the gap between clinical image based pathology and possibilities with highly multiplexed imaging methods is still large. In our lab we are utilising these novel imaging methods in translational and clinical research to demonstrate the value of multiplexed imaging for clinical decision making.
