Servicing and maintenance of hand-held fire extinguishers

Hand-held fire extinguishers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology undergo annual servicing by KTH’s contracted fire consultant to ensure their functionality and reliability. Servicing includes identifying any need for replacement and upgrading, as well as direct corrective measures such as sealing, etc.

Annual servicing

Annual servicing and remedial work are carried out by service technicians from a contracted supplier and coordinated by the KTH safety function. Servicing and operation must be compliant with standard SS-3656 and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once hand-held fire extinguishers have been serviced, an inspection label is attached to indicate the year and month in which the device was serviced.

Hand-held fire extinguishers undergo workshop inspections at fixed intervals. During the workshop inspection, the extinguisher's condition, gaskets and wear parts are checked in full. Worn, broken or obsolete parts are replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Workshop inspections must be carried out every 5 years for liquid extinguishers and every 10 years for powder and carbon dioxide extinguishers.

In-house inspection

In-house inspection is carried out by the school/equivalent as part of systematic fire safety management.

During in-house inspection, a check is performed to ensure that the hand-held fire extinguisher is in the intended location, visible and not blocked.

A check is also performed to ensure that the hand-held fire extinguisher is of the required type, that the pressure indicator (where applicable) is indicating the correct pressure, that the extinguisher is free from visible damage, that the sealing ring is intact, and that the annual service label is valid.

Contact the KTH safety function if hand-held fire extinguishers have been used or damaged, if their servicing has been delayed or there are any other issues with them.
