Amelie on the analyse of the Technical Preparatory Year and semester
Head of School Amelie Eriksson Karlström talks about the move from Södertälje, Tecnical Preparatory Year and the work on coordinating the programmes at KTH Campus and Campus Flemingsberg
During the spring, the CBH school has analysed the qualifying courses we offer, i.e. Technical Preparatory Year and Semester. In connection with KTH's campus relocation from Södertälje, CBH is taking over the Technical Preparatory Year and teachers from the ITM school, which is one reason why the school wanted to work on coordinating the programmes at KTH Campus and Campus Flemingsberg. It was also a good opportunity to conduct a study of the Technical Preparatory Year in connection with the ongoing review of KTH's programme offerings.
In February, a working group was set up at the CBH School to investigate the future strategy and dimensioning of the degree programme. The working group was led by GU Torbjörn Gräslund and consisted of heads of department, heads of division and Programme Directors from the two departments at the school that provide undergraduate education (IP and MTH), administrative support and a student representative.
The group's work has been summarised in a report that was presented to the President and KTH's management team this week. The report contains statistics showing how important the Technical Preparatory year is for KTH's recruitment to the Master of Science in Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Engineering programmes, and that there is reason to believe that the Technical Preparatory Year will become increasingly important in the coming years, when student numbers are expected to decline.
The report also contains several interesting suggestions on how the Technical Preparatory Year could be further developed, for example by including language courses for students with poorer knowledge of Swedish and/or English, or by offering the possibility of a flexible pace of study. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the working group for their excellent work - we will benefit greatly from this report in the future!
