Open position: Assistant Professor in Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics

Published Jun 22, 2023

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health is looking for an Assistant Professor in data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics.

Subject description

Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics cover data integration, analysis, visualization, and data interpretation for patient stratification, discovery of biomarkers for disease risks, diagnosis, drug response, and monitoring of health. The precision medicine research is expected to make use of existing strong assets in Sweden and abroad, such as molecular data (e.g., omics), imaging, electronic health care records, longitudinal patient and population registries, and biobanks. The subject area concerns research in the general area of precision medicine and diagnostics, with a strong computational profile. This research subject area aims to lead to innovative development and/or application of novel data-driven methods relying on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational techniques. The subject is focused on applications within cancer, for example immunotherapy, the microenvironment of tumors, or the identification of novel therapeutic targets.

Duties

The appointment concerns research in data-driven precision medicine and active participation in the DDLS network. The research is expected to develop relevant methods that utilize omics data sets, for example, spatial omics data. Duties include supervision of doctoral students and postdocs, as well as teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and postgraduate levels. The assistant professor is expected to develop new courses in the subject area as well as teach courses given within the School for Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Health.

The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). Following application, the assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.

DDLS

Data-driven life science (DDLS) uses data, computational methods and artificial intelligence to study biological systems and processes at all levels, from molecular structures and cellular processes to human health and global ecosystems. The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) aims to recruit and train the next generation of data-driven life scientists and to create globally leading computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The program is funded with a total of 3.1 billion SEK (about 290 MUSD) over 12 years from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation. The DDLS program will recruit 39 high-profile young group leaders and launch over 210 postdoctoral positions and establish a research school for 260 PhDs, including industry PhDs and postdocs. Fellows will be recruited to the 11 participating host universities/organizations but brought together under a national DDLS program coordinated by SciLifeLab. The DDLS program has four strategic areas: cell and molecular biology, evolution and biodiversity, precision medicine and diagnostics, and epidemiology and biology of infection. For more information, please see www.scilifelab.se/data-driven . During 2022-2023, the first round of 20 young group leaders joined us as DDLS Fellows, and now we are looking to recruit an additional group of 19 fellows. Each DDLS Fellow will receive a recruitment package of 17

MSEK (about 1.6 MUSD) for a 5-year period, covering their own salary and other resources, such as two Ph.D. students and postdoc positions. The Fellow positions are tenure-track with the host organizations assuming responsibility for the long-term faculty appointments following a tenure evaluation. The future of life science is data-driven. Will you be leading that change with us? Then join us in this unique program!

Eligibility

An individual who has obtained a Ph.D. or equivalent research expertise is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications within five years prior to the expiration of the application period should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave, or similar circumstances.

Grounds of assessments

The assessment criteria for appointment as an assistant professor at KTH are stated in KTH's appointments procedure section 1.3 and apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importanceis that the applicant has

  • Research expertise demonstrated through research publications, conference attendance, attendance of research cooperation, and other undertakings in the scientific community such as for example, assignments as a reviewer or expert.
  • Potential to qualify for a higher teaching post. This includes the potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the subject field in question and the ability to establish, review and develop the research area in question.

Of second highest importanceis that the applicant has

  • An interest in and understanding of pedagogical development within the subject field in question.
  • Postdoc visits to a research environment other than the university at which the applicant defended their doctoral thesis. In application-oriented areas, experience from research and development work within the industry or other organizations is considered to correspond to a traditional postdoc visit to another university.

It is also importantthat the applicant has

  • Ability to communicate well in English, both orally and in writing.
  • An interest in and understanding of leadership in an academic environment, third-stream activities, andawareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • Administrative expertise.

Special grounds of assessment for promotion to associate professor

When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, the applicant's ability to independently initiate and carry out research of high academic quality, published in international publications, and the applicant's ability to obtain financing for research operations will be assessed. Of highest importance is the applicant's ability to independently establish new collaborations and research specializations. It is also of highest importance that the applicant has displayed teaching and supervising expertise. Ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great importance in the application for promotion.
