Establishment of a programme course on first or second cycle

A new course at first and second cycle to be given within a programme must be established a full academic year in advance. The reason for this is that the course must be included in the programme syllabus for the current programme, which is established one year before the start of the programme.

The last date for establishing a new course is 15 October, one year in advance. Please note that the process below must be followed before documents are submitted to the school's syllabus reviewing committee no later than 1 September. This is so that the course has time to be anchored and processed before the school's faculty board makes a decision to establish the course.

Process for establishing new course within a programme at EECS

Intended course coordinator and director of studies:

1. The intended course coordinator defines the course content, education cycle, prerequisites and student target group.

2. The course coordinator makes sure that the programme director for the programme, who is the target group for the course, is notified.

3. The course coordinator then ensures that the director of studies for the department to which the course will belong is notified. The responsible director of studies/head of directors of studies announces, in turn, the proposed course to the head of the department in charge.

4. The proposal for a new course is processed by the school's group of directors of studies and the group of programme directors.

5. The intended course coordinator fills out the decision template at KTH's intranet: beslutsmall för inrättande av kurs – beslut och bilaga  (in Swedish) with background, course syllabus and a short description of the course (for contract education there is a special decision template, see beslutsmall för inrättande av kurs inom uppdragsutbildning ). On KTH's intranet, there is also information on the formulation of specific prerequisites, examples of module codes, etc.

6. The director of studies adds a course code, information on which unit the course should belong to, the main field of study, disciplinary domain, and if needed, specific entry requirements. The form shall then be sent to the school's course syllabus reviewing committee, kursplaner@eecs.kth.se , no later than 1 September.

The course syllabus reviewing committee, the school's office of student affairs and the school's faculty board:

7. The course syllabus reviewing committee checks that the course does not overlap with existing courses at the school, examines the texts, adds potential standard texts for the school (such as a link to the code of honour), works with the course coordinator and finalises the text.

8. The course syllabus reviewing committee conveys the basis for the decision to the director of first and second-cycle education, who prefers the course proposal to the school's faculty board for decision.

9. The school's office of student affairs submits the decision to Ladok, who registers the course data in Ladok.

10. The school's office of student affairs enters the course syllabus and additional course data into Kopps and submits the course syllabus to Convertus for translation to English.

11. The responsible director of studies examines and approves the translated English course syllabus.

12. The course syllabus is published in the course and programme directory at kth.se.
