Cardiovascular modeling cross-school research receives platform funding

Published Dec 12, 2022

Assistant Professor Seraina Dual has, in collaboration with Professor Erik Fransén, received SEK 160,000 from KTH Digitalization Platform for her cross-school activities to continue building extensive cardiovascular modelling knowledge. Furthermore, the platform supports the effort to bring the virtual human as close as possible to clinical reality. This is necessary to allow for automated tuning of the virtual patient.

Seraina Dual, what is your research area?

"I am developing intelligent technologies to predict, prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease affects every third of us in a life-time motivating my research. In particular, I am interested to understand how we can address the diversity in patients that doctors see in the clinic and innovate solutions that work for each of them," Seraina Dual  says.

Describe the research infrastructure you are currently building at KTH Campus Flemingsberg

"We are currently building an advanced testrig which models the dynamics of the cardiovascular system virtually and allows for testing of novel device concepts based on a concept introduced at ETH Zurich. The testrig is called a hybrid mock loop, because it combines a virtual model of the patient with a physical interface. In this way, we can test devices in dynamic interaction with a virtual patient."

Can you describe your collaboration with Erik Fransén?

"I met Erik Fransén  in the supervision course, which he teaches and I attended. We quickly found a joint passion for creating a virtual model of the cardiovascular system and for making them patient-specific. His expertise in modeling and optimisation is crucial for enabling physiologically realistic results."

How will the support from the KTH Digitalization Platform help?

"First and foremost, the platform supports Erik Fransén and myself to build bridges across the schools of KTH and build on the extensive knowledge in cardiovascular modeling built up over the years in the Stockholm area. Furthermore, the Digitalization Platform supports our effort to bring the virtual human as close as possible to the clinical reality. This is necessary to allow for automated tuning of the virtual patient."

How can people collaborate with you?

"The hybrid mock loop offers the possibility to test cardiac support devices and hemodynamic sensors (pressure and flow) in realistic physiological pressure and flow conditions. If you are interested in testing your technologies, under realistic physiological conditions, please send us an email: seraina@kth.se .
