Data-driven learning agreement and credit transfer – DDLA

The project involves developing system support (including system administration) for credit transfer applications and assessments for prior learning or studies abroad, aiming for more time efficient and legally secure handling – for both students and teachers.

Project context

Every year, Programme Directors (PA) at KTH carry out thousands of assessments for credit transfers, both from prior learning and exchange studies. The system support for these assessments has been minimal – at best existing in large Excel spreadsheets, and in many cases based solely on memory and personal experience. This results in inefficiency and a lack of legally secure and equal assessment.

To address this issue, the 5-year engineering programme in Industrial Engineering and Management at ITM has developed a portal for handling all such assessments (studieplaner.itm.kth.se). The portal has been in use at ITM since 2019 with good results, but it needs to be scaled up to provide access for more users, and its operation needs to be systematised; a long-term solution is needed for maintenance and future updates.

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the project is to further develop the portal to achieve:

  • Legally secure/equal assessment for all students

  • Time savings for faculty

  • Support for students to choose good courses during exchanges.

Project results (output)

The end result is a tool (a digital portal) for handling and assessing study plans and credit transfer, which is available for all programmes at KTH. Central functionality is:

  • students create new courses in the portal by adding the courses (e.g. the ones found at exchange universities)
  • these courses are then matched with a KTH course in a credit transfer proposal. Course information and a link to the course website are added by the student
  • teachers can then go in and look at all proposals awaiting assessment
  • decisions are saved (both positive and negative, including any comments)
  • if another student proposes the same course combination, the teacher can see previous assessments.
