Challenge-driven project course for wicked problems and societal change (2414-EECS)

The project involves identifying a process for developing courses on wicked problem management, by developing a new challenge-driven project course in the Master's programme Sustainable Digitalisation (TDIGM). Both the course development process and the course outcome are documented and evaluated.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P2. Ability to handle wicked problems for the sustainable societal development

P3. Active student-centred learning

P9. A developing educational culture

Project context

In a rapidly changing world shaped by sustainability challenges at both local and global levels, we are confronted with a new type of intractable and complex problems - problems for which no solution is known, neither by the teacher nor by anyone else. Learning to address these new types of problems requires a shift for both students and teachers at KTH. We need to develop a new educational culture that is less about conveying predefined packaged knowledge, and more about understanding complex societal issues and identifying strategies for managing uncertainty.

Purpose (outcome)

The overall purpose is to develop students' ability to deal with intractable problems for sustainable social development, but the process for developing courses with this purpose is itself a complex problem with many conflicting goals. The aim of the project is to test and document a process for such course development by creating a challenge-driven project course in the Master's programme Sustainable Digitalisation (TDIGM). In addition to developing the course itself, the process for course development and the course outcome are documented and evaluated.

Project results (output)

  • A newly developed challenge-driven project course in the Mmaster's programme Sustainable Digitalisation (TDIGM)

  • A completed first course round [HT25 according to pdir]

  • A report on knowledge exchange, the course development process, and course outcomes

  • A scientific article based on the experiences from the project
