Impact on teaching and learning
Recent decades have seen growing calls for root-and-branch reform of the systems that underpin academic career advancement in universities worldwide. Specific concerns have often been raised about the marginalisation of academics’ impact on teaching and learning during appointment and promotion processes. However, a remarkable shift is underway, as pioneering institutions rethink how they evaluate, support, and reward academics’ contribution to teaching and learning. The momentum for change has been accelerated as universities unite with national and global peers to drive cross-institutional reform to career pathways and promotion criteria.
The network Advancing Teaching
The presentation will chart the progress by the Advancing Teaching , a global network of over 50 universities devoted to informing, supporting, and connecting universities with this shared mission for systemic change. In particular, it will highlight:
- the Career Framework for University Teaching: a tool developed to support career progression on the basis of academic impact in teaching and learning that has been adopted and adapted by universities across the network;
- the Teaching Cultures Survey: outcomes of a cross-sectional survey designed to track the perceived culture and status of teaching at universities worldwide that are implementing systemic reform to their academic reward systems;
- Roadmap For Change: guidance on how the process of institutional change might be planned and implemented based on the experiences of universities that have rolled out changes to their support and reward systems, both successfully and unsuccessfully.
The talk will conclude by discussing how the momentum for improving the reward of university teaching can be advanced and sustained.
Don't pass up the chance to improve your teaching skills and make your classrooms more welcoming and culturally sensitive.
